☀️ AI Morning Minute: Agent vs. Chatbot
Two AI tools that look almost identical, until you ask them to actually do something.
You type into a box, the AI types back. From the outside, a chatbot and an agent look like the same thing. But the difference between them is the difference between getting advice and getting help, and it’s the whole reason “AI agents” became the buzzword of the year.
Chatbot
A chatbot answers. You ask a question, it gives you a response, and that’s the end of the exchange. It’s a conversation, and a genuinely useful one. It can explain a tax rule, draft an email, or talk you through fixing a leaky faucet.
But it stops at words. A chatbot can write you a great to-do list. It can’t go do anything on the list. The doing is still all on you.
Agent
An agent acts. You give it a goal, and it takes the steps to reach that goal: looking things up, using other software, checking its own work, and adjusting as it goes. It doesn’t just tell you how to book the flight. It goes and books the flight.
The trick underneath is a loop. An agent does a step, looks at what happened, and picks its next move based on the result. It keeps going until the job is done or it gets stuck. That “keep going on its own” part is what makes it an agent and not a chatbot.
The tell
Ask yourself one thing: when the AI finishes, do you have an answer, or do you have a completed task? A chatbot hands you information and you take it from there. An agent hands you a done job. That’s also why agents need more guardrails, since a chatbot that goofs gives you a bad sentence, while an agent that goofs takes a bad action out in the world.Hey Seattle!
