Cursor is an AI coding tool (a code editor with an assistant built in that can read your whole project and write changes for you). The price looks like any other subscription. The confusing part is what happens during the month, because what youâre buying is an allowance, not unlimited use.
Everything below is accurate as of this morning, and AI pricing changes constantly. The specific numbers will drift. The way to think about the decision holds up longer.
What the money buys
Hobby is free, with a limited number of agent requests. Pro is $20 a month, with bigger Pro+ ($60) and Ultra ($200) plans above it. Teams is $40 per person per month and adds shared billing, admin controls, and privacy settings. Enterprise is custom.
The paid plans come with a monthly pot of AI usage. When Cursor switched to this in June 2025, Pro became â$20 of frontier model usage per month at API pricing.â In plain English: about $20 worth of the expensive models, measured at the rates developers pay.
What it doesnât buy
Predictability. Each request costs a different amount depending on which model you pick and how much of your code it has to read. A top model working across a big project drains the pot way faster than a quick question does.
The switch didnât go smoothly. Cursor ended up refunding surprise charges and admitted âWe were not clear that âunlimited usageâ was only for Autoâ (the mode where Cursor picks a cheaper model for you).
It also doesnât buy a fixed menu of models. OpenAI is cutting off Cursorâs access to its models after SpaceX agreed to buy Cursorâs parent company, with November 12, 2026 as the proposed date. After that, you can bring your own OpenAI key, but only for some features.
The math
If you mostly use Auto, $20 goes a long way. If you pick the top model for every request, you can burn through the monthâs allowance in a week or two (I dunno exactly how fast, it depends a lot on the project). After that, you either drop back to cheaper models or turn on extra usage, which bills at model rates until you hit whatever spending cap you set.
Set the cap. Seriously. And check your usage in Cursorâs dashboard for the first couple of weeks, so you know your own pace.
The question that outlasts this monthâs prices is whether you actually need the top model, or just like knowing you picked it. Try a week on Auto. If your work doesnât get worse, the $20 plan is probably plenty.
