☀️ AI Morning Minute: Progressive Disclosure
The design trick that keeps you from running away screaming
Every app, website, and AI tool you use makes a choice about how much to show you at once. Get that choice wrong and people leave. Get it right and they don't even notice there was a choice. That invisible decision has a name.
What it means:
Progressive disclosure is a design technique where you show people only what they need right now and hide everything else until they ask for it. Instead of dumping every feature, setting, and option on one screen, you start with the basics and let users dig deeper on their own terms. Jakob Nielsen, co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, introduced it as a formal pattern in 1995.
Why it matters:
It’s the reason Google’s homepage works. One search bar, nothing else. The advanced search filters exist, but they’re tucked behind a click. If Google showed you every operator and filter on the front page, you’d close the tab.
AI tools are starting to use the same principle on themselves. AI agents with access to hundreds of tools perform worse when all those tools are loaded into memory at once. The fix is the same one Nielsen proposed 30 years ago: show the agent only what it needs for the current task. Load the rest when it’s relevant.
Bad progressive disclosure is why people abandon online checkouts. Ask for shipping, billing, payment, gift wrapping, newsletter signup, and a survey all on one page and you lose the sale. Break it into steps and completion rates go up. About 18% of users abandon orders because the process feels too long or complicated.
Simple example:
A waiter at a good restaurant hands you a one-page dinner menu. You order. Then they ask about drinks. Then dessert. Each choice gets its own moment. A bad restaurant hands you a 12-page spiral-bound novel with breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, kids' meals, catering options, and a wine list. You're still reading page four when everyone else has finished eating.
Progressive disclosure is the one-page menu. You get what you need when you need it, and nothing before.
